To support PM Modi's demonetisation move, couple goes for 'Chai pe Shaadi'

NEW DELHI: The marriage season in India is in full bloom but with most of the old cash wiped off from people's hands and limited options for withdrawals, couples are finding it tedious to be united in wedlock. Whether a fair drive to eradicate black money or not, the Centre's decision to ban the higher-denomination currency notes has put a lot of marriage hopefuls in the same boat. Though the government has given some relief for the families celebrating weddings but the complaints have poured in from many areas that the banks have refused to let the couples or their family members withdraw a lumpsum amount. For the families celebrating weddings, the joyous mood has turned into anxiety as they have to make advance payments to caterers and florists in cash. Amid this cash crunch, a couple in Surat (Gujarat) has set forth an example by marrying over tea. The couple's family served only tea to guests invited in the marriage ceremony. "Narendra Modi, during 2014 general elections, has started the initiative 'Chai pe Charcha' to connect with people across the country, in a similar manner we have connected two hearts on just 'Chai'," Govind Dhabi, an elder of the community, said. "By the time the Prime Minister announced the demonetisation move, dates of our marriage were already fixed. We understand and fully support the PM's drive against black money and corruption," Daksha Prmar, the bride, said. "By keeping our wedding ceremony simple and serving only tea to the guests, we extend support to PM's mission," she added (With additional inputs from IANS)
