Heavy Rainfall Causes Severe Waterlogging In Thiruvananthapuram, Disrupts Traffic & Flights

The downpour which lasted for nearly an hour in many parts of Thiruvananthapuram quickly submerged roads making it difficult for commute, especially for two-wheeler riders.

Heavy rainfall was experienced in many parts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on Tuesday. The unexpected sharp spell led to severe waterlogging in multiple parts of the city, including Vanchiyoor Junction, the police station and the court premises, causing widespread disruptions.

The downpour which lasted for nearly an hour quickly submerged roads making it difficult for commute, especially for two-wheeler riders. The incomplete sanitation and drainage works worsened the situation preventing proper water flow. Areas such as Kaithamukku, which were redeveloped under the "smart roads" project, also faced similar waterlogging issues, as per a report on Mathrubhumi.

At Vanchiyoor Junction, water levels increased significantly leading to inundation of both the police station and the court premises. Despite an earlier rain warning, the intensity of the rainfall was unexpected.

The bad weather also affected air travel, leading to flight diversions. As a result of lightning and poor visibility, several flights scheduled to land at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport were rerouted. Two Air India Express flights were diverted—one from Mumbai was sent to Coimbatore Airport in Tamil Nadu, while another from Bengaluru faced disruptions, reported Kerala Kaumudi.

Thiruvananthapuram Weather Update

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds of up to 40 kmph over the next few hours. The impact is expected to be felt across several districts in southern Kerala, including Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Idukki.

For Thiruvananthapuram and its surrounding areas, the weather forecast until the morning of March 19 predicts a partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 34°C and 25°C, respectively.

With water levels rising in low-lying areas and major roads affected, traffic congestion has intensified across the city. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as efforts are underway to manage the waterlogging and mitigate further disruptions.
