Three Killed In Sivakasi Fireworks Factory Blast; TN CM Announces Solatium

A fireworks factory explosion in Naranapuram, Sivakasi killed three workers and injured three others due to suspected chemical friction.

Three workers were killed while three others suffered injuries in a powerful explosion at a licensed fireworks unit in Naranapuram, near Sivakasi, on Monday afternoon. The blast, which tore through Shri Mariamman Fireworks and Amorces Industries around 3:50 PM, is suspected to have been caused by chemical friction during the production of aerial and fancy crackers.

The deceased have been identified as T Karthigai Selvam (25), S Sangeetha (40), and K Lakshmi (45). While Selvam’s body was recovered immediately, Sangeetha’s was found trapped under debris, and Lakshmi’s remains were discovered later after earthmovers were deployed to clear the wreckage, as per a report on The New Indian Express.

Three other women suffered serious burn injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Sivakasi Government Hospital.

TN CM Announces Solatium To Sivakasi Victims 

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Further, the CM announced Rs 1 lakh for those seriously injured and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries.

"I was deeply shocked and pained to hear the tragic news. I express my deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families," the CM said, as per a report on PTI.

Authorities have since suspended the factory’s operating licence and registered a case under the Explosives Act against the unit’s owner and foreman. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the blast and ascertain if safety protocols were violated.
