A major incident was averted on the Pune-Mumbai railway link on October 6 when the officials spotted boulders on the tracks. The timely action by the authorities of the Pune railway division ensured that the big boulders were removed.

As per the railway officials, the boulders were found at the Chinchwad-Akurdi section of the Pune railway division of Central Railway on Friday evening, as reported by the news agency ANI. Boulders were kept in five places at this location, the officials added. In a video that was probably shot by some railway officials, big boulders can be seen lying on the tracks. The viral video is around 1 minute, 35 seconds in duration.

"While our railway staff of Civil engineering department has gone in this section for routine track maintenance weld testing work, staff observed that major boulders were kept on UP Line track." central railway public relations office said in a press statement. Timely detection of this miscreant activity by staff avoided possibility of major incident, it added.

The boulders were spotted by an alert guard on a Pune-bound suburban train running on the parallel tracks, and the Chinchwad station master was informed.

The station master of Chinchwad, upon receiving the information, alerted the loco pilot (driver) of the 16352 UP Nagarcoil-Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Express coming on the tracks. The train was halted until the boulders were removed from the tracks, said railway officials. A probe has been launched by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) to identify the miscreants responsible for the act, as reported by the news agency PTI.

This incident comes days after the Udaipur-Jaipur Vande Bharat Express escaped an accident in Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan as the loco pilot noticed an iron rod and stones placed on its tracks and immediately stopped the train, officials said, as reported by PTI. A North Western Railway (NWR) official said unidentified miscreants attempted to obstruct the rail route, and an FIR was registered at the Gangrar police station in Chittorgarh in connection with the incident.
