Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi-Led Cabinet Accepts Attorney General APS Deol's Resignation

The Punjab CM assured that the post left vacant by Advocate General A P S Deol will be filled by Wednesday.

New Delhi: After the Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu addressed his concerns over the appointment of A P S Deol as state's advocate general in a meeting with Harish Chaudhary and CM Charanjit Singh Channi, the Punjab cabinet on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Advocate General A P S Deol.

The Punjab CM assured that the post left vacant by Advocate General A P S Deol will be filled by Wednesday.

"We have sent names of police officers of over 30 years of service. Out of them, the Centre will send a panel in the coming days. We will select a new Director General of Police (DGP) among the panel," Punjab CM was quoted by ANI.

In order to resolve the unease between the two leaders regarding some of the government appointments, AICC Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Chaudhary held a meeting with CM Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress state unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday.

Apart from the appointment of Advocate General A P S Deol, Sidhu also raised his concern over the appointment of Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota as officiating director general of police (DGP).

A few hours after the meeting, Congress state unit president, while addressing a press conference, questioned the state government regarding the status of the investigation into the 2015 Kotkapura police firing incident.

Punjab CM after the cabinet meeting, while addressing the media said that Advocate General A P S Deol had submitted his resignation a few days back.

Stating that the resignation and its approval will be sent to the state governor, Punjab CM Channi said, "The Cabinet today accepted it (resignation)."

Previously, the Punjab Congress chief had questioned the appointment of APS Deol as the new advocate general of Punjab. Deol was a counsel for former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini and represented him in cases related to police firing on Sikhs protesting against the sacrilege cases.

"Mr AG-PUNJAB, Justice is blind but people of Punjab are not. Our Congress party came in power with a promise to give justice in Sacrilege Cases, in which you appeared before the High Court for main conspirators/accused persons and made serious allegations against our Govt," Sidhu had tweeted recently.

Along with Punjab AG, the state's Director General of Police (DGP) would also be changed and will be sent to the Governor. Currently, IPS Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota is heading as the state's DGP.
