Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese spoke at a special community event in Sydney on Tuesday (May 23). Modi was greeted in traditional fashion at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena. Modi spoke to members of the Indian diaspora at a community event to celebrate the country's dynamic, diverse Indian diaspora, to great applause from the audience.

1. In his remarks at the community event, PM Modi stated, "When I came here in 2014, I promised you that you would not have to wait another 28 years for an Indian Prime Minister." So here I am again in Sydney."

2. "Our lifestyles may differ, but Yoga now connects us. We've been friends for a long time because of cricket. Tennis and films, however, are now connecting us. We may prepare food in different ways, but Masterchef has brought us together," the Prime Minister said. 

3. Modi stated that he has heard that the Chatkazz'Chaat' and 'Jalebi' from Jaipur Sweets in Harris Park are very delicious. "I want you all to take my friend Australian PM Albanese to that place," Modi said.

"I believe the historic ties between India and Australia goes beyond 3 Cs (commonwealth, cricket, curry) 3Ds (democracy, diaspora, dosti) and 3Es (energy, economy, education). India-Australia relationship is based on mutual trust and mutual respect," PM added. 

4. "Mutual trust and respect have not developed solely as a result of India-Australia diplomatic relations." "The real reason, the real power is you Indians in Australia," Modi said.

5. According to Modi, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) sees India as a bright spot in the global economy. "According to the World Bank, if anyone is up against global headwinds, it is India." The banking system in several countries is in trouble today, but the strength of India's banks is being recognised worldwide," the PM said.

6. "The last time I saw someone on this stage was Bruce Springsteen, and he did not receive the reception that Prime Minister Modi has received. The boss is Prime Minister Modi," Albanese said at the community event. According to Albanese, Springsteen is known as "The Boss," and his concert in Australia did not draw as large a crowd as Modi's.

The Indian Australian Diaspora Foundation (IADF), which organised the event, expected a crowd of more than 20,000 people. The show began with cultural performances. Modi supporters in Brisbane and Canberra have organised special buses. Modi stated that he will meet the Indian community in Sydney at a special event before departing for Japan to attend the G7 Summit in Hiroshima.

According to the 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics census, 619,164 Australians claimed to be of ethnic Indian ancestry. This represents 2.8% of the Australian population. 592,000 of them were born in India. The last time Prime Minister Modi visited Australia was in 2014.
