Weather Update: Heavy Downpour Predicted In Karnataka, IMD Issues Red Alert For Kerala. Check Details

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Coastal & South Interior Karnataka on Wednesday, according to the IMD update.

There seems to be no relief for India's Silicon City Bengaluru after heavy rains in the last few days have brought the city to a standstill with long traffic snarls, power cuts, and heavy flooding on the streets. IMD on Tuesday predicted heavy rain for the next two to three days in Bengaluru. The creation of the cyclonic system is likely to bring isolated, extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala and Mahe and over coastal and south interior Karnataka on Wednesday.

Karnataka To Get Heavy Rains In Coming Days

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Coastal & South Interior Karnataka on Wednesday, according to the IMD update. A cyclonic circulation lies over South Interior Karnataka & neighbourhood and extends up to mid-tropospheric levels.

“Widespread rains are expected for next five days in coastal and North interior Karnataka. Three days widespread rains followed by fairly widespread rains in the next two days in South interior Karnataka,” said Dr Geeta Agnihotri, a scientist at the meteorological department on Tuesday.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stated that the city received rains 150 per cent more than usual recorded in September 1st week, according to the news agency PTI.
 
Chief Commissioner of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Tushar Giri Nath claimed that this is the second wettest rainfall in the city in the last 50 years.

Red Alert In Four Districts Of Kerala

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in four southern districts of Kerala in the coming days.

A red alert has been issued in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Idukki. Heavy rainfall is also predicted in the coastal areas of the state. Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts are on orange alert. A yellow alert has also been issued in the rest of the districts. On Tuesday, the administration closed all educational institutions in the capital city, Thiruvananthapuram. People living in the hilly areas have been cautioned about receiving heavy rainfall.

Also, the authorities of the Incident Response System have not been allowed to leave without the permission of the respective district collectors, reported news agency ANI. The red alert by IMD shows the expectation of extremely heavy rains of over 20 cm in a 24-hour period.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a ‘red alert’ to Idukki, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts of Kerala and an ‘orange alert’ to several others neighbouring districts. IMD has also forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu Puducherry & Karaikal for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Odisha On Yellow Alert

Also, the Met office has predicted heavy rain in Odisha over the next few days as a new low pressure is likely to form weeks after three such weather systems resulted in devastating floods in the state. The Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre issued a yellow warning of heavy rain in some places across Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Nabarangpur districts on Tuesday.

West Bengal To Receive Heavy Rainfall

A cyclonic circulation will form over the east-central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday and is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal in the subsequent two days, the Met department said on Tuesday.

Under its influence heavy rainfall is likely in Gangetic West Bengal on Friday and Saturday, the weatherman said. The southern districts of West Bengal, which comprise its Gangetic area of the state, have received deficient rainfall this monsoon affecting paddy cultivation.

Other states

Fairly widespread/widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over  Arunachal Pradesh during 6-
8 and over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on 7 September, as per IMD update.
