Karnataka Govt Assures Security During Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life' Release

Karnataka government assured the Supreme Court that it will take all necessary measures to maintain law and order and safeguard the rights of all parties involved.

 The Karnataka government has submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court pledging full security for the release of veteran actor Kamal Haasan’s much-anticipated film Thug Life. The state assured the apex court that it will take all necessary measures to maintain law and order and safeguard the rights of all parties involved.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter later on Thursday. The affidavit said, as per a report on PTI: "It is the duty and responsibility of the State Government to uphold fundamental rights of its citizens and in maintaining the 'Rule of Law’ in the state. [I]t is submitted that, in the event the movie is released and screened in the State of Karnataka, the State Government, as is duty-bound, shall take all necessary steps to maintain law and order, and provide security to all the citizens concerned and other stakeholders."

Why 'Thug Life' Release Was Put On Hold In Karnataka? 

The movie 'Thug Life' released worldwide on June 5 expect Karnataka since the film's release was put on hold in the state. What started as a row over a statement by the actor, soon snowballed into a language controversy between Tamil and Kannada speaking population. The row started after Kamal Haasan during the audio launch of the movie said that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil'. Following this, pro-Kannada group started staging protests and demanded a ban on the release of the film in the state.
