J&K: Encounter Between Security Forces & Militants In Shopian Underway, 1 Gunned Down

The J&K police have informed that 1 unidentified terrorist was killed. Reports said that a joint team of police and army launched a cordon and search operation in Ganowpora.

Srinagar: An encounter is underway between militants and security forces in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police informed on Friday afternoon.

A fierce gunfight ensued between militants and government forces in the Ganowpora area of South Kashmir's Shopian district on Friday.

It was earlier reported that a joint team of police and army launched a cordon and search operation in Ganowpora.

As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off a gunfight.

A senior police officer also confirmed the exchange of firing between militants and security forces. Meanwhile, J&K police have informed that 1 unidentified terrorist was killed.

"One unidentified terrorist killed in Shopian encounter. Search is going on," police said.

As per the sources, two to three militants are believed to be trapped. More details are awaited.
