IMD Issues Rainfall Alerts For TN, Kerala & AP For Next 3 Days. Check Details

The rainfall is due to a low-pressure area that formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal, positioning itself off the coasts of northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, influenced by an upper air cyclonic circulation that developed on November 11, 2024. The low-pressure system has since moved westward and now lies off the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts. 

According to a national weather bulletin, IMD said, "Under the influence of the yesterday's upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal, a low pressure area has formed over the same region at 0900 UTC of 11th November, 2024 and it moved nearly westwards and now lies over southwest Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu & adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts at 0300 UTC of 12th November, 2024.

"The associated cyclonic circulation extends upto 4.5 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height. Scattered low and medium clouds with embedded intense to very intense convection lay over Westcentral adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal. Scattered low and medium clouds with embedded moderate to intense convection lay over rest of Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea," it said. 

Forecast for Tamil Nadu

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places across multiple districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, and Villuppuram, as well as in Puducherry and Karaikal.

Forecast for Andhra Pradesh

In Andhra Pradesh, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are predicted at scattered places over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Some isolated areas are expected to experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. In Amaravati, the forecast predicts partly cloudy skies with mist or haze, with temperatures around 33°C and 24°C for the maximum and minimum, respectively.

Kerala Alert

From November 13 to 17, 2024, IMD predicted heavy rainfall of 7-11 cm over 24 hours in isolated locations across Kerala. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts.
