A heatwave is proclaimed in the plains when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius above average.

According to the IMD, a severe heatwave is declared when the temperature deviates from normal by more than 6.4 degrees Celsius.

On April 21, 2017, the national capital reached a high temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius. On April 29, 1941, the all-time high maximum temperature for the month was 45.6 degrees Celsius.
