Congress's Shama Mohamed Fat-Shames Rohit Sharma, Then Deletes Post. This Is What Party Said

Congress leader Pawan Khera said the remarks don't reflect the Party's position and Mohamed has been asked to delete the post.

Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed fat-shamed Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma after he was dismissed after 15 runs off 17 balls during a match against New Zealand for the ICC Champions Trophy.

The Congress leader also said Sharma needs to lose weight. "Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!," she wrote in a post on X that has been deleted now.

"What is so world-class about him when compared to his predecessors? He is a mediocre captain as well as a mediocre player who got lucky to be the captain of India," she wrote in another post.

Congress Distances Itself From Shama's Remarks

Congress leader Pawan Khera said the remarks don't reflect the Party's position and Mohamed has been asked to delete the post.

"Dr. Shama Mohammed, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party's position. She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future. The Indian National Congress holds the contributions of sporting icons in the highest regard and does not endorse any statements that undermine their legacy," he said on X.

After her comments snowballed into a controversy, Shama Mohamed said it was a "generic tweet".

"It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying? It is a democracy,' she told ANI.

BJP criticised the Congress spokesperson for her comments. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla said, "Those who have lost 90 elections under the captaincy of Rahul Gandhi are calling the captaincy of Rohit Sharma unimpressive!"

"I guess 6 ducks in Delhi and 90 election losses is impressive but winning the T20 World Cup isn't! Rohit has a brilliant track record as captain by the way!" he added.
