Bengal: Clashes In Mominpur After Religious Flag Torn. Suvendu Claims Police Station Taken Over By Miscreants, Writes To Shah

A clash erupted in Mominpur after a religious flag was allegedly torn by some miscreants during the Eid Milad-Un-Nabi celebration.

West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Monday appealed to the home ministry to deploy central forces in the state over alleged violence in Mominpur.

According to news agency ANI, on October 9, a clash erupted between two groups from two different communities after a religious flag was allegedly torn by some miscreants during the Eid Milad-Un-Nabi festival. Later, a group of people reached Ekbalpore PS demanding the arrest of the accused in the incident.

Following tensions between two communities in Mominpur, a group of people surrounded Ekbalpore police station in Kolkata in protest against the violence, ANI reported citing other reports.

In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and West Bengal Governor La Ganesan, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari demanded the deployment of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to control the situation as he claimed that some miscreants have taken over the Ekbalpur Police Station.

Blaming the state government for being unable to control the law and order, he said the central forces will ensure that the spark can be extinguished before it turns into a wildfire.

"The Hindu community has come under attack in the Khidirpore Momipur area on the eve of Lakshmi Puja. Many shops and bikes belonging to Hindus have been vandalised by hooligans and anti-socials," Adhikari wrote.

The BJP leader wrote, "I apprehend that, as the West Bengal government is reluctant to act against the perpetrators this time as well because they belong to a certain community, this time this may flare up and start to spread across the state resulting in loss of lives and property; both public and private. The state government has already meekly surrendered in front of the wrath of the goons who have taken over the Ekbalpur Police Station. If morning shows the day, then the day definitely is gloomy."

Amid reports on violence in Mominpur, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar also tweeted blaming the police. He alleged that no action was taken as the houses of Hindu locals were being attacked.

The West Bengal government has been targeted by the Opposition party over the violence in the state, especially after the declaration of the 2021 Assembly election results. This year, the theme of a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata depicted the post-poll violence that claimed at least 16 lives.

West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar will visit the Khidderpore area under Ekbalpore PS to assess the situation today, ANI reported.
