New Delhi: Mumbai police investigating the brutal rape and murder case of a Dalit woman in Sakinaka informed that the accused has confessed to the crime and the weapon used in committing the heinous crime has been recovered.

Addressing a press briefing on Monday, Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale said Police has added charges under the SC/ST Atrocities Act against the accused. He also informed that the accused, Mohan Chauhan, was under the influence of some substance.

"The victim belonged to a particular caste. Thus, we have applied the section of SC/ST Atrocities Act and we will be investigating the same. We had arrested the accused. In the interrogation, he had confessed to committing the crime. We have also recovered the weapon that was used in the crime," said Nagrale, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The official further told reporters that the accused during the confession accepted that victim and him knew each other. Ahead of the incident, the duo got into an argument.

"The victim was demanding something from the accused. They later argued. We are anticipating, the main reason he attacked her was a bit of argument that they had. He was under the influence of some substances," Nagrale said.

Meanwhile, an amount of Rs 20 lakhs from government schemes and Chief Minister's relief fund will be given to victim's kin, who has three daughters.

The 34-year-old woman was brutally raped and injured on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday in the Sakinaka area of Mumbai. She sustained serious injuries because of a rod put in her private parts. She succumbed to her injuries at Rajawadi Hospital in Mumbai during treatment in the early hours of Saturday.
