World Leprosy Day 2025: Know History, Theme, Significance, And More

World Leprosy Day raises awareness about leprosy, focusing on its history, current challenges, and the need for social inclusion and health care for affected individuals.

World Leprosy Day 2025: World Leprosy Day is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of January, with India marking it on January 30th. Leprosy is a neglected disease that affects more that 120 countries, with more than 2,00,000 new cases reported every year. The day was chosen by French humanitarian Raoul  Follereau to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's compassion for those suffering from leprosy. Known as the world's oldest diseases, leprosy is an infectious disease that affects the nerves, especially in cooler areas like hands, feet, and face.

What Is Leprosy?

Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is a chronic disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. It most commonly affects the skin, peripheral nerves, eyes, and upper respiratory tract. Although modern medicine offers effective treatments that can treat the disease, the disease still poses a challenge in some areas due to late diagnosis and limited awareness. The disease progresses slowly and symptoms often take years to appear, so early diagnosis is key to successful treatment. If left untreated, leprosy can lead to neurological damage, impairments, and deforminites.

World Leprosy Day 2025: History

World Leprosy Day began in 1954 when French philanthropist Raoul Follereau initiated the idea of raising awareness about leprosy and showing solidarity with those affected by the disease. Follereau, a renowned humanitarian, chose to commemorae Mahatma Gandhi, who died on January 30, 1948, on the last Sunday of January. By commemorating the death anniversary of Gandhi, Follereau honoured Gandhi's compassion and dedication to those with leprosy.

Since its inception, World Leprosy Day has been dedicated to eliminating the stigma associated with leprosy, raising global awareness and supporting efforts to eradicate leprosy. This day highlights the need to raise awareness of this neglected tropical disease and support global efforts to eradicate leprosy.
