World Tourism Day 2023: Things To Keep In Mind Before Setting Out For Mountaineering

World Tourism Day serves as a reminder that the purpose of life extends beyond mere existence; it’s about embracing the world’s wonders, conquering fears, and relishing the ultimate experiences.

World Tourism Day which is observed every year on September 27th, has the objective of fostering recognition of tourism’s multifaceted significance, encompassing its societal, cultural, political, and economic contributions. This day serves as a reminder that the purpose of life extends beyond mere existence; it’s about embracing the world’s wonders, conquering fears, and relishing the ultimate experiences. India, known for its remarkable diversity and cultural richness, entices travellers with a plethora of distinctive and thrilling destinations to explore.

There’s no better way to foster personal growth and discovery than embarking on a solo journey, armed with hope and curiosity, ready to explore the uncharted. Such is the profound beauty of solo travel.

Abhay Mishra, Director & Strategy Consultant at 3102bce, aptly puts it, "Solo travel is a journey of self-discovery through new experiences, not a package tour where you are racing around. It is all about savouring those moments like that quiet afternoon in a coffee shop, or discovering a heritage property or enjoying the folklore under a tree with the locals, or climbing mountains. But remember solo travel comes with cautionary aspects. Always do your research to understand the safety aspects because your ability to enjoy a place will largely be dependent upon how well you know the place."

But, what if this solo travelling is none oher than climbing mountains? We have heard stories of passionate individuals who have climbed the Everest, which have indeed set ablaze the fire in us to try it too. But, Everest might not be everyone's cup of tea. There are a lot of things to keep in mind before opting for such missions. None the less, mountaineering is not synonymous only to The Everest. There are a lot other mountains that one can climb and have the time of their lives in the journey.

Here is a checklist of the things that you need to keep in mind before opting for such a thrilling journey.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE OPTING FOR MOUNTAINEERING-

Aditya Gupta who is an  Everester and also the Founder of The Rug Republic listed down a few things that one should know before opting for mountaineeing:

1.Physical preparation:

It is essential to be physically fit and in good health before going on a difficult mountain climbing expedition. Regular exercises, such as cardio, strength training, and endurance workouts, can help build stamina and endurance. A simple conditioning tool available to everyone is the staircase! Climbing the equivalent of 50-100 stories every day (build it up over a few days) can go a long way in making the mountain climbing expedition a breeze for you.

2.Mental conditioning:

Going on a difficult mountaineering adventure can be challenging, so it is important to be mentally prepared for the journey. Mental preparation includes being positive, having a flexible mindset, and knowing what to expect. Charles Darwin has said famously: "Attitude creates the difference between an adventure and an ordeal". So mountaineering could become an ordeal without the right mindset.

3.Training and Skills:

Acquire the necessary mountaineering skills. Consider taking courses from accredited organizations or hiring a certified guide to teach you essential skills such as rope work, navigation, ice and rock climbing techniques, and avalanche safety. This will give you a lot of confidence.

4. Selection of route and guide:

Before climbing, it is important to research and select a suitable route and a knowledgeable guide. Choose a route that matches your experience level and fitness, and be sure to gather information about the trail, terrain, and weather conditions. The guide should have extensive knowledge of the area and experience in leading treks.

5. The right equipment:

It is important to invest in good quality equipment, such as a backpack, tent, sleeping bag, and trekking poles. Ensure that the equipment is lightweight, waterproof, and comfortable to use. Additionally, carry essential items like a water bottle, headlamp, and a multi-tool.

6. Clothing and footwear:

Choose appropriate clothing and footwear, considering the weather and terrain conditions. Layering clothing can help regulate body temperature and protect against the sun, rain, and cold. Good quality, sturdy and comfortable footwear is also a must to avoid blisters or twisted ankles.

Additionally, Bhavna V. who is the Co Founder, Nysh.in also suggested to invest in high-quality mountaineering gear, including appropriate clothing, footwear, backpacks, tents, and safety equipment.

7. Better safe than sorry:

Mountaineering can be harsh on the skin, especially at high altitudes, so it's important to use sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Additionally, carrying basic medicines like painkillers, antihistamines, and anti-diarrhea tablets can be useful in case of emergencies.

8. Get ready for a shared experience:

Bonding and getting to know other members can make the experience more enjoyable and also be helpful if any issues arise during the journey.
