Know How Food Is Related To Fitness

Proper nutrition plays a significant role in enhancing physical performance, aiding recovery, and supporting overall well-being.

Food and fitness are intricately linked. Proper nutrition plays a significant role in enhancing physical performance, aiding recovery, and supporting overall well-being. Food is fuel for our bodies and fitness levels. According to Nuppur Patil who is a celebrity Nutritionist & Dietician, "The quality and quantity of food intake affect energy levels, muscle development, and overall well-being. What you eat greatly impacts your fitness goals, and your level of physical activity influences your dietary choices. Striking a harmonious balance between the two is essential for achieving and maintaining a healthy, fit lifestyle."

In this regard, Dr. Apoorva Garg, who is an Associate Director of Operations at BeatO listed down how food is related to fitness:

  • Energy Balance: To achieve fitness goals, it is important to maintain an appropriate energy balance. This means consuming the right amount of calories that aligns with your activity level. Consuming calories with the energy spent is essential for weight management and overall health.
  • Macronutrients: Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are the macronutrients that provide the energy needed for physical activity. Athletes often require different ratios of macronutrients depending on their sport and training intensity. It is essential to tailor your diet to your fitness goals.
  • Micronutrients: Micronutrients like vitamins and minerals are essential for various physiological functions, including energy metabolism, muscle contraction, and tissue repair. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains ensures that you get these vital nutrients.

In addition to him, Aman Puri, who is the founder of Steadfast Nutrition said, "Individuals who exercise more need the right food at the right time to support their muscle recovery and reduce inflammation and other exercise-related complications. A healthy and fit body needs 70% of a good diet and 30% of workout. Without enough carbohydrates, proteins and fats, anyone can feel sluggish and fatigued during workout. One should also focus on specific vitamins and minerals, such as iron, vitamin D and zinc, amongst others. Eating the right food can help provide the energy needed to finish a race or just enjoy a casual sport or activity. Hence, the right food taken at the right time enhances fitness performance."

Food And Fitness For People With Diabetes:

Dr. Apoorva Garg listed the following:

  • Carbohydrate Management: Carbohydrates are the most important source of blood sugar. People with diabetes must monitor their carbohydrate intake carefully and consider factors such as the glycemic index to choose foods that have a greater impact on blood sugar.
  • Protein and Fibre: Including lean proteins and high-fiber foods in the diet can increase blood sugar levels. Fiber reduces the absorption of carbohydrates and reduces the risk of blood sugar.
  • Portion Control: Proper portion control is essential for people with diabetes. Eating in moderation can assist in reducing calories, body weight, and blood sugar levels.
  • Regular Monitoring: People with diabetes should regularly monitor their blood glucose levels, particularly before and after meals and exercise. This is beneficial for them to adjust to their food and insulin regimen to maintain stable levels.
  • Consultation with a Dietitian: Working with a registered dietitian or nutritionist with diabetes expertise can be beneficial. They can create personalized meal plans and provide guidance on food choices, assisting individuals with diabetes to achieve and maintain their fitness goals while managing their condition efficiently.
