Jamai Raja: Man who slept with 55 brides, dies a lonely death

Barmer (Rajasthan): The man who slept with 55 brides before fleeing with their jewelry died alone in Nimbalkot village of Sindhari, in Rajasthan’s Barmer district. He never married and lived alone. In various police stations of Barmer, Jiyaram Jat (54) had 18 cases against him, says a report published in English daily Hindustan Times and his long criminal record of targeting child brides earned him the title of ‘Jamai Raja’ in police files. On Saturday, he died and was cremated by state police. According to HT, in 2004, Jat was arrested in the molestation case, and at the time, he had looted on 55 brides. During interrogation, Jat said he only targeted small houses occupied by a single family, where a girl married as a child was ready for ‘gauna’, ‘Gauna' is a practice of sending female child brides to their husbands when they become adults. He used to come when women were alone in the house and introduce himself as the girl’s husband. Since she was married in childhood, she wouldn’t recognise him. He then decamps with the jewelry to be sent with the girl to her in-laws before the dawn. After his 2004 arrest, Jat maintained low profile. However in 2013, when he was back to attack his 56th victim, he was caught.
