New Delhi: The Festival of Bhai Dooj also known as Bhaiya Duj, Bhai Bij, and Bhatri Dwitiya is marked after two days of Diwali, the second date of Kartik Shukla Paksha. To glorify the relationship between Brother and sister, sisters apply tilak on their brother’s foreheads and wish them a long life ahead. Sisters pray for the prosperity of their brothers. Brothers promise their protection and support along with presents and sweets.

Muhurat for the Bhai Dooj

In the Hindu culture, the timing of Pooja has a special significance as people prefer to do all the rituals according to the Muhurat and Hindu calendar tithi. This year Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on the 26th of October according to the western calendar. The auspicious time for this year’s Bhai Dooj pooja is 2:43 PM. The second date of Kartik Shukla Paksha will end on the 27th, if you celebrate on the 27, 1:18 PM to 3:30 PM is shubh muhurat for the pooja. On this day’s pooja Bhai Dooj khatha is considered essential and all sisters do tilak, only after listening to that story.

Rituals are similar to the Rakshabandhan. Sisters wake up in the morning and wear new clothes to get ready for the pooja. After listening to the katha of Bhai dooj they apply tilak on the brother’s forehead and pray for their long health. Along with giving coconut and sweets to their brother they also feed them food.

History

The myth suggests that Yama and Yamuna were brother and sister.) Yamuna called his brother for many years to visit their house and have food but Yama did not visit her house. However, after years, Yama visited his sister on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Yamuna was surprised and pleased to see him at the door. She invited him inside and welcomed him with so much respect and love. She cooked delicious food for him and served it to him. Yama was pleased to receive this warm welcome and asked her to request a boon.

Yamuna requested that sisters will have the opportunity to meet their brothers on this day each year. Brother Yama made it worthwhile by saying "Tathastu" after hearing his sister's boon.

On this day, sisters still apply tika to their brothers and offer them gifts like clothes and candy. The brothers also show their sisters their love and affection by giving them gifts. On this day, people pay special homage to Yama and Yamuna.
