History
The myth suggests that Yama and Yamuna were brother and sister.) Yamuna called his brother for many years to visit their house and have food but Yama did not visit her house. However, after years, Yama visited his sister on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Yamuna was surprised and pleased to see him at the door. She invited him inside and welcomed him with so much respect and love. She cooked delicious food for him and served it to him. Yama was pleased to receive this warm welcome and asked her to request a boon.
Yamuna requested that sisters will have the opportunity to meet their brothers on this day each year. Brother Yama made it worthwhile by saying "Tathastu" after hearing his sister's boon.
On this day, sisters still apply tika to their brothers and offer them gifts like clothes and candy. The brothers also show their sisters their love and affection by giving them gifts. On this day, people pay special homage to Yama and Yamuna.
