Tamil Nadu: Actress Meera Mitun Seeks Action Against Her Harassers

Meera Mitun's plea came after the cybercrime wing of Chennai police summoned her to appear for an inquiry in connection with the case registered against her.

Chennai: Model-turned-actor Meera Mitun, who has been booked for allegedly using casteist slur against people belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, has said she is being harassed by some people and sought the intervention of Chief Minister MK Stalin to take action against them.

Mitun's plea came after the cybercrime wing of Chennai police summoned her to appear for an inquiry in connection with the case registered against her.

In a video released on her YouTube channel on Wednesday, the actress said that she had spoken only about those who had been bothering her and not about the (Scheduled Caste) community in general.

Pointing out that she had been portrayed in a bad light, and that many are now demanding her arrest, Mitun said even Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru had gone to jails and it does not bother her. “Anyways, such a situation will not come,” she added.

The actor sought action against those who speak ill about her and her family. She also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen laws in the state to prevent people from harassing women.

Mitun, however, did not mention who was harassing her or what kind of harassment she has been facing.

Video clips from her interview to a YouTube channel, in which she was seen using casteist slurs against Scheduled Caste people, had gone viral on social media, with people from several quarters seeking action against her.

Based on a complaint from Vanni Arasu, the deputy general secretary of Viduthalai Siruthaigal Katchi, the police on Sunday filed a case under sections 153 (malignantly or wantonly giving provocations with n intent to cause riot), 153 A(1)(a), 505 (1)(b) (within the intent to cause or likely to cause fear among the public) of the Indian Penal Code and several sections of the SC and ST (prevention of Atrocities) Act. Subsequently, on Wednesday, the police summoned her to appear for an inquiry.
