Dhanush Opens Up About Begging on Tirupati Streets for ‘Kuberaa’: 'Sekhar Sir Made Me Do It'
At the pre-release event of ‘Kuberaa’, Dhanush revealed how he stepped out of his comfort zone and begged on Tirupati streets for authenticity.

Dhanush is set to captivate audiences with his upcoming social drama 'Kuberaa', and the National Award-winning actor has gone to remarkable lengths to bring authenticity to his role. At the pre-release event in Hyderabad, Dhanush revealed that he stepped into the shoes of his character, quite literally, by begging on the streets of Tirupati while in costume.
“I agreed to the film immediately, trusting the director’s name and reputation. But in the end, he made me beg on the streets of Tirupati,” Dhanush shared with a chuckle, drawing applause and laughter from director Sekhar Kammula, who stood by his side.
Dhanush Steps Out of Comfort Zone
This role is nothing short of transformational for the actor. Portraying a destitute man who fights back against life’s odds, Dhanush has said goodbye to glam in Kuberaa. With a thick beard, worn-out clothing, and an almost unrecognisable appearance, the trailer alone signals a deeply raw performance.
Recalling the gritty shoot locations, Dhanush earlier mentioned, “To see another part of the world, a sight which you're not exposed to... You're always in your comfort zone, like you do only what's convenient, you're protected. I come from very humble roots.”
The actor was referring to the challenging experience of filming in a dumpyard for hours, an emotionally and physically taxing scene that, he says, broadened his perspective.
About the Film: A Gritty Drama with a Stellar Cast
Directed by Sekhar Kammula, Kuberaa also stars Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, and Jim Sarbh in lead roles. The film marks Dhanush’s second venture in Telugu after Sir, but interestingly, the script for Kuberaa came to him before Sir. “Kuberaa is my 51st Tamil film and my second Telugu film after Sir. In fact, Sekhar Sir had approached me with the script of Kuberaa even before Sir,” Dhanush disclosed.
Certified UA by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Kuberaa underwent 19 cuts, trimming over 13 minutes from the original runtime. The film has been produced by Suniel Narang and Puskur Rammohan Rao under Amigos Creations and is gearing up for a pan-India theatrical release on June 20.
With Dhanush pushing the boundaries of method acting and Sekhar Kammula’s signature grounded storytelling, Kuberaa promises an emotionally charged cinematic experience. Whether it wins hearts at the box office remains to be seen—but it’s clear that Dhanush has already poured his heart into this role.
