IMDb Unveils Top 250 Highest Rated Indian Movies: '12th Fail' Takes Top Spot
Filmmaker Mani Ratnam has the most titles on IMDb's top 250 Indian films list, while Vidhu Vinod Chopra's ‘12th Fail' topped the list.
New Delhi: IMDb has published its much-awaited list of the Top 250 Highest Rated Indian Movies, which includes films from all decades, genres, and regions. This comprehensive compilation highlights both current successes and timeless masterpieces that have had a major impact on Indian cinema history. The dynamic list represents the tastes of IMDb's large community of moviegoers, who cast over 8.5 million votes for the films listed.
Last year's highly acclaimed film ‘12th Fail’, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and starring Vikrant Massey, topped the list. Other prominent titles include Vijay Sethupathi's ‘Maharaja’, ‘Kantara’, and Kiran Rao's directorial ‘Laapataa Ladies’, which has been picked as India's official Oscar submission.
Vikrant Massey On 12th Fail
Honoured by ‘12th Fail’ top ranking, Vikrant Massey highlighted an emotional scene from the film. He said, “The scene I want to highlight is the champi sequence between Manoj and his mother, which was a pivotal moment in the film when Manoj comes to the realization that his grandmother has passed. What makes it special is the amount of planning and production that goes into shooting even a single shot… It was a scene where we were required not to cry, but weep. So, it was a big challenge.”

The list has five films from 2024: ‘Maharaja’, Ajay Devgn's ‘Maidaan’, ‘The Goat Life’, ‘Laapataa Ladies’, and ‘Manjummel Boys’. Meanwhile, Aamir Khan's starrer '3 Idiots', 'Taare Zameen Par', and 'Dangal' managed to get into the top 20.
Among the directors on the list, Mani Ratnam has seven films, while Anurag Kashyap comes in second with six films.
