What is shadowbanning on Twitter?
Shadowbanning or ghost banning or comment ghosting is the process of partially blocking a social media user or their content from the online community. Though there is nothing concrete about what causes a shadowbanning, once someone’s profile has been shadowbanned, other users will not get a notification when that particular account mentions them. The shadow-banned account will not show up on search queries and the only people who will be able to see their tweets are the ones who are following that account. Their tweets will also not be visible in any thread.
A user cannot participate in any chats and one won’t be even alerted by Twitter on being shadowbanned.
Shadowbanning is apparently done by Twitter when it feels that the user’s content is not good for the online community but still the content is under the Terms Of Service that the user must follow.
However, Twitter has been explicitly denying shadow banning any user.
