Vikrant Massey Shares Why He Left Religion Column Blank On Son Vardaan’s Birth Certificate

Actor Vikrant Massey, who became a father in February 2024 with the birth of his son Vardaan, has once again opened up about his family’s deeply personal and inclusive approach to religion.

Actor Vikrant Massey, who became a father in February 2024 with the birth of his son Vardaan, has once again opened up about his family’s deeply personal and inclusive approach to religion. In a candid conversation with Rhea Chakraborty on her podcast, the '12th Fail' actor shared that he and his wife Sheetal Thakur chose to leave the religion section empty on their son’s birth certificate, an intentional decision rooted in their belief system.

Religion is a personal choice: Vikrant Massey

Speaking about his perspective, Vikrant said he believes in faith, but not in religious labels. “I think religion is a personal choice. For me, it's a way of life. I think everyone has the right to choose their religion. Mere ghar pe har prakaar ke religion aapko milenge. I think religion is man-made. Mai pooja karta, gurudwara bhi jaata hun, dargah bhi jaata hun. I get peace with all of this.”

He explained that he feels spiritually connected and is grateful for everything he has, something he attributes to a higher power. Despite his inclusive beliefs, Vikrant shared that his previous statements on religion sparked online backlash, which did affect him.

No religion mentioned for Vikrant Massey's son Vardaan

Massey went on to explain why he and Sheetal made a conscious choice to leave the religion field blank on Vardaan’s birth certificate. “On the birth certificate of my baby boy, we left the space for religion blank. So when his birth certificate came from the government, there was no religion stated on it. Toh yeh nahi hai ki sarkaar aapko bolti hai likhna padega. It depends on you. The moment we got his birth certificate, I put a dash in the religion column. I will be so heartbroken if I realise my son is treating anyone on the basis of the practices they follow. I am not raising my son that way.”

Vikrant has often spoken about the beautifully diverse makeup of his family. His father is Christian, his mother is Sikh, and his brother embraced Islam at 17. Vikrant himself is married to Sheetal Thakur, who comes from a Rajput Thakur background. While the family doesn’t adhere to a single faith, they did perform a traditional namkaran ceremony to name their son.

Vikrant and Sheetal, who tied the knot in 2022 in a private celebration with loved ones, welcomed their baby boy in early 2024. Since then, the actor has chosen to take a brief step back from work commitments to focus on parenting and quality time with his family.
