When Nimrat Kaur Recalled Terrorists Killing Her Father: ‘He Was Kidnapped & Terminated’

Nimrat Kaur opened up about the tragic loss of her father, an Indian Army Major, who was kidnapped and killed by terrorists in Kashmir in 1994.

It is no secret that Airlift actress Nimrat Kaur comes from a proud Army background. Her father, Major Bhupender Singh, was martyred in a terrorist attack in Jammu in 1994. Recently, Nimrat inaugurated a memorial dedicated to her father's memory and sacrifice for the nation.

As Indian celebrities and citizens salute the Indian Armed Forces for their bravery amid the ongoing escalations at the Line of Control (LOC) with Pakistan following Operation Sindoor—India's strong retaliation after the Pahalgam terror attack—an old interview of Nimrat Kaur has resurfaced and gone viral across social media platforms.

Nimrat Kaur's brave father

In the interview with ETimes, Nimrat recounted the tragedy with strength and emotion. She shared:“He was a young Army Major, an engineer posted on the border roads of the Army in a place called Verinag (the first valley after the Jawahar Tunnel on your way to Srinagar from Jammu). Kashmir was not a family station, so we continued living in Patiala while he served in Kashmir.”

She added,“We were on our winter vacation in January 1994, visiting our father in Kashmir, when the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen kidnapped him from his workplace. After seven days, they killed him. They had made some ridiculous demands involving the release of terrorists, which he obviously refused. He was just 44 when he died. We flew back with his body to Delhi. I saw his body for the first time only in Delhi.”

Nimrat said she never returned to Kashmir after that tragedy. However, during the Cannes screening of The Lunchbox, she decided to visit Verinag again in search of closure.

She praised the Indian Army for standing by martyr families:“The Army stands by you like a rock. They are your family. Even today, they will come at the drop of a hat if you need anything. I think it’s also because of my father’s goodwill and his relationships.”

About Majoe Bhupender Singh

Major Bhupender Singh was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s highest military and civilian gallantry awards. The honour was presented on March 13 — Nimrat’s birthday.

Nimrat joins other Bollywood stars from Army families like Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Anushka Sharma, Akshay Kumar, Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta, Gul Panag, Neha Dhupia, Preity Zinta, and Arjun Rampal in proudly standing with the Armed Forces during these testing times.
