Karan Johan Treated Varun, Alia & Siddharth Like Megastars On SOTY Set; Know Why

Karan Johar recently shared his experience working with Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, and Varun Dhawan, whom he launched in his 2012 film 'Student of the Year'.

Karan Johar, well-known Bollywood director and producer, recently shared his experience working with Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, and Varun Dhawan, whom he launched in his 2012 film 'Student of the Year'. In an interview on 'Game Changers with Komal Nahta', Johar spoke about his deep bond with the trio, who have now become top stars in the industry.

Why Karan Johar treated Varun, Alia & Siddharth like megastars on his set

When asked who he bet on before the film's release, Johar recalled how he met the three actors. He mentioned that Sidharth and Varun were his assistants, while he first met Alia when she was still in school. Johar explained that he never treated them like newcomers, a decision that, in his view, played a significant role in their performances. He said, “I told my team—Sidharth and Varun, these two were my assistants, and I met Alia for the first time when she came from school. And when I launched them, I told everyone on set, including the choreographer, production team, and designer, to treat these three like megastars.”

He further elaborated, stating, “I told them that if you give them that confidence, they will face the camera like stars. If you treat them like newcomers, they will give you the performance of newcomers.” Johar emphasized that the actors delivered stellar performances as a result of this approach. Reflecting on their relationship, he shared that all three actors fondly refer to him as “Karna” and that they have developed a strong friendship over the years.

The director also mentioned how they did a 12-day workshop together before the film to build rapport. Karan Johar’s insights into working with the trio reveal the unique bond they share and highlight the importance of nurturing confidence in newcomers.
