Bob Marley's Grandson Jo Mersa Passes Away At 31

According to reports, South Florida radio station WZPP says it has proof that Marley had a heart attack and died suddenly.

New Delhi: Reggae musician Jo Mersa Marley, a Jamaican-born American and Bob Marley's grandson, died at the age of 31. Journalist Abka Fitz-Henley reported on Tuesday that the singer was allegedly discovered unconscious inside a car. According to reports by South Florida radio station WZPP, it has proof that Marley had a heart attack and died suddenly.

Who Was Jo Mersa Marley:

According to the New York Post, Jo spent his younger years in Jamaica before relocating to Florida for high school. He was the eldest of Stephen Marley's children and had seven sisters and five brothers. With his father, his uncle Ziggy Marley, and his aunts Cedella Marley and Sharon Marley, Jo supposedly made his stage debut when he was four years old. He supposedly attended Miami Dade College to study studio engineering. 

Works Of Jo Marley:

 Jo made his debut with 'My Girl' in 2010 where he collaborated with his cousin Daniel Bambaata Marley. Two years later, he released 'Bad So' which was included in his 2014 EP titled 'Comfortable'. Jo Mersa Marley released his debut album titled 'Eternal' in 2021.

In a previous interview with Rolling Stone, the late artist had talked about carving his own niche in the industry. "I am one of the new generations of Marleys, but I am still experimenting at the same time. My plan is to do something new with my roots," he had said.

His grandfather Bob Marley was a major contributor to the popularization of Reggae music. Some of his greatest hits included 'Everything’s Gonna Be Alright', 'Get Up, Stand Up', 'Is This Love', 'I Shot the Sheriff' and 'No Woman, No Cry. He had passed away at the age of 36.

Talking about the legacy of his legendary grandfather, the “Mucho humo” singer had once shared with The New York Post, “We always hear those reflections, speaking about those things, about the role that he played not only as family member and father but also in the world and the impact he had on the Reggae community and the Reggae culture, the roots, bringing forward the message of Rastafari and love, overall love”, 

Mourning the death of Jo Mersa on Tuesday, Mark J. Golding, a Jamaican politician, penned a heartfelt note on Twitter.

"I've just learned of the tragic loss of Joseph 'Jo Mersa' Marley. A talented young reggae artiste, son of Stephen Marley & grandson of Bob Marley at only 31 yrs old," he wrote. "The loss of a child is a devastating blow no parent should face, my condolences to Stephen & the entire family."  

Jamaican-American reggae musician Shaggy also posted a picture of Jo Mersa on his Instagram. He captioned the post with, "So saddened by the news of the passing of this young king Jo Mersa Marley, sending prayers and condolences to the Marley family."

Jo Mersa Marley is survived by his wife, daughter and sister Mystic Marley, who is also a musician.
