As per the police, the 20-year-old final year B.Tech student at IIT Delhi was found hanging to a nylon rope inside his hostel room.
A student at the IIT Delhi has allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room. The 20-year B.Tech student at IIT Delhi who recently appeared in his final exams has allegedly died by suicide by hanging in his hostel room, the police have said. Following a call at the Kishangarh police station under the jurisdiction of southwest Delhi, the police arrived at the hostel room. While the police have not found any suicide note, they don’t suspect any foul play either.
The room was locked from the inside and was opened in front of the victim’s parents, as per a senior police officer. The student who stayed at the Udaigiri hostel committed suicide by hanging himself using a nylon rope in his room, he further added. "The crime investigation team was called at the spot. Nothing suspicious was found and inquest proceedings are under process," the officer was further quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Notably, in a similar suicide at the IITs, Kedar Suresh Chougule, a second year B.Tech Chemical Engineering student at the IIT Madras, was found at hanging at his hostel room inside the campus on April 21. Ironically, the suicide case at the IIT Madras surfaced days after the IIT council meeting in Delhi to help provide mental health support to students. Importantly, the IIT Madras suicide case was the fourth such case at IIT Madras in three months, and the sixth incident of suicide at IITs in the first four months of 2023, with the other two cases being at IIT Bombay and IIT Madras, respectively.
Another loss of life at IIT campus that shocked the country was the death of 18-year-old Vikram Solanki, a first year student at the IIT Bombay. Solanki allegedly jumped off from the seventh floor of his hostel building. The SIT (Special Investigation Police) of the police arrested one of Solanki’s classmate Armaan Khatri on the charges of abetting his suicide, caste-based discrimination, and harassment. Armaan was later produced before the court. However, the Bombay High Court later granted bail to Armaan Khatri citing lack of evidence of discrimination or harassment against him.
