The special night services will be available along both ways of Kavi Subhash (New Garia) and Dum Dum at 10:40 pm (on weekdays) from January 1, 2025 (Wednesday).
A Metro spokeperson said that this decision is taken due to low occupancy on these special services. Therefore, the carrier has decided to levy Rs 10 on the tickets in this stretch on special night services after normal services on weekdays. The official also stated that the surcharge is being implemented on a trial basis and it will be reviewed in future.
As reported by The Times of India, commuters paying Rs 5 for travelling just one stop or the minimum 2 km will need to pay Rs 15 Likewise, those paying Rs 25 for a ride between New Garia and Dum Dum will be charged Rs 35.
The proposed surcharges were scheduled to be implemented in the second week of Decemeber 2024. On December 1, 2024, the Kolkata Metro announced that those passengers who take special night metro train services will have to shell out extra Rs 10 from December 10. However the implementation of this decision was deferred at the last moment.
The special night services were introduced in May 24, 2024. As per the details, the special services operated at 11 pm on weekdays. However, the train schedule was later advanced by 20 minutes on June 24, setting the current 10:40 pm timing.
