Water In Karnataka Might Just Become Tad Costlier As Govt Plans Hike After 11 Years
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who oversees Bengaluru’s water scenario, announced on Friday that the proposed hike would be just one paise per liter.

The Karnataka government is considering a minor increase in water tariffs amid financial strain on the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who oversees Bengaluru’s water scenario, announced on Friday that the proposed hike would be just one paise per liter—far lower than the 7 to 8 paise increase initially suggested by the BWSSB.
The proposed revision would mark the first water tariff adjustment in 11 years, as reported by Times of India. Shivakumar clarified that a final decision would be made following discussions with Bengaluru MLAs and the proposal is expected to be included in the upcoming Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) budget.
Water Crisis In Bengaluru
Addressing the city’s water crisis, Shivakumar pointed out that last summer, nearly 7,000 borewells had dried up, forcing residents to depend on private water tankers. To prevent price exploitation, the government has imposed a cap on tanker rates and implemented measures to regulate their operations, as per a report on The New Indian Express. Additionally, arrangements have been made to supply water to areas facing severe shortages.
In discussing long-term solutions, Shivakumar stated that the Cauvery 6th phase drinking water project is in the final stages of planning and will soon be presented to the cabinet for approval, as per reports. Public feedback will also be sought before proceeding with implementation, ensuring that the initiative effectively addresses Bengaluru’s future water needs.
With the rising temperatures and intensifying water demand especially in Bengaluru, the Deputy Chief Minister stressed the importance of efficient distribution and government intervention to prevent overreliance on private suppliers. He reiterated the state’s commitment to maintaining affordable access to water while balancing revenue needs.
The tariff hike comes days after announcement on auto-rickshaw fares hike in Bengaluru.
