BJP MLC Demands Renaming UP's Muzaffarnagar To 'Lakshminagar'

The hot-topic of changing name of cities is back, with the latest demand from Uttar Pradesh BJP's state vice president, Mohit Beniwal.

BJP MLC Mohit Beniwal has demanded to change the name of Muzaffarnagar district, which is associated with Mahabharata period, to 'Lakshminagar' during the proceedings of the budget session of the Legislative Council. Beniwal said in the House that to respect our traditions, the names of our land and cities should also be in accordance with the civilization and tradition.

He said, "I want to make a historical demand through you. I demand to change the name of Muzaffarnagar district, which is associated with Mahabharata period, to 'Lakshminagar'. This is not just a question of changing the name but a resolution to restore our cultural pride, civilization's revival and historical truth."

"Muzaffarnagar is not an ordinary land, King Parikshit had received the knowledge of Bhagwat Purana from Rishi Shukdev in 'Shukratal' of this district, which is associated with Mahabharata period. Is it appropriate that this holy place should be known by the name of a Mughal ruler Muzaffar Ali? This region is a centre of agriculture, trade and economic prosperity as well as the sweetness of jaggery, the name 'Laxminagar' will become a symbol of the economic progress of the region," he added.

He further said that the name will be as transformative as the pure flow of the Ganga which will re-establish the civilization and cultural glory and will give direction to the identity of this region.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "Today, during the proceedings of the Budget Session 2025 in the Legislative Council, Lucknow, through the House, a demand was made to change the name of the district #Muzaffarnagar associated with the #Mahabharata_era to #Lakshminagar. #LakshmiNagar #Lakshminagar @blsanthosh".
