A month after Trinamool Congress lost the election in West Bengal, the Mamata Banerjee party faced another major setback after rebellion, 4 ED teams on Wednesday arrived at TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee's residence.

Abhishek Approaches HC To Challange CID

Earlier today, Banerjee had approached the Calcutta High Court challenging a notice issued by the CID in connection with the alleged signature forgery case in the West Bengal Assembly.

Seeking legal protection, Banerjee filed a petition before the High Court, effectively seeking relief from possible arrest by the CID. Justice Apurba Sinha Roy has granted permission for the matter to be heard. The case is likely to come up for hearing on Friday.

As part of its investigation into the alleged forgery case, the CID had directed Banerjee to appear at its Bhawani Bhavan headquarters on June 1. However, citing the Sonarpur incident and health-related issues, Banerjee wrote to the agency seeking 15 days' time and did not appear before investigators on Monday.

Background Of Signature Forgery Dispute

The controversy began after a letter submitted by Abhishek Banerjee to the Assembly Speaker named Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of the Opposition, Firhad Hakim as Chief Whip, and Asima Patra and Nayana Bandyopadhyay as Deputy Leaders.

However, rebel MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha alleged that signatures on the proposal had been forged and lodged a complaint with the Speaker. Following the complaint, both legislators were expelled from the party.

On Wednesday, the rebel bloc proposed Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of the Opposition and former minister and Raghunathganj MLA Akhrujjaman as Chief Whip. The group also proposed Javed Khan, Sandipan Saha, Shiuli Saha and Sabina Yasmin as Deputy Leaders.
