Sonam Raghuvanshi Confesses To Murdering Raja, Says Meghalaya Police

Sonam has reportedly confessed to plotting her husband's murder with Raj Kushwaha, according to Meghalaya Police.

Ahead of the court hearing on Wednesday, the Meghalaya Police said Sonam, who had allegedly plotted the murder of her husband, had confessed to her crime. She, along with Raj Kushwaha, has been named as the prime accused in the case. Three other suspects will also be presented before the court.

All five accused are set to appear before a Shillong court on Wednesday afternoon. The police have stated their intention to seek a 10-day remand to further investigate the crime, including a visit to the scene of the incident.

Speaking on the case, Shillong SP Vivek Syiem said, "After forming the SIT, we examined all available evidence. We had access to a large amount of data, and once we reviewed everything, the picture became clear. However, multiple narratives had emerged — some claimed it was a kidnapping, others said it was a robbery. Even the family believed it might be one of these. But we had evidence indicating Sonam had left the crime scene."

Sonam Took A Tougher Route To The Double-Decker Bridge

According to police, Sonam had suggested a visit to the famous Double Decker Bridge with Raja. Of the two available routes, she deliberately chose the more difficult one, bypassing the easier path. Sonam has since admitted to being fully involved in the murder. The police added that the case currently appears to have a romantic angle.

Meanwhile, Sonam's brother visited Raja's family on Wednesday and claimed that Raj Kushwaha was illiterate and merely worked for their household.

How Was Raja Raghuvanshi Murdered?

Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered during what was supposed to be a honeymoon trip to Sohra, Meghalaya. The murder was allegedly orchestrated by his wife, Sonam, and her purported paramour, Raj Kushwaha.

According to police, Sonam and Raj jointly plotted Raja’s killing. While Raj never physically went to Shillong, he played a key role by hiring three contract killers — Akash, Vishal, and Anand — and coordinated the murder remotely over the phone.

Sonam allegedly lured Raja to an isolated stretch of road under the pretext of sightseeing. Once there, the three hired attackers ambushed Raja and struck him with sharp-edged weapons. The post-mortem report later confirmed he was hit twice on the head with a sharp object, leading to his death on the spot.

Raja used to go to the gym and was well built. There was an attempt to push him into a gorge first. When Raja fought back, one of the accused struck him from behind with a sharp weapon, resulting in his death.

After the murder, Sonam and the assassins fled to Guwahati and stayed together for a day before dispersing to different locations. Eventually, Sonam went missing, only to reappear in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, where she surrendered at a roadside eatery.
