Scorching February! Why Is Mumbai Sizzling Under Heatwave?

The maximum temperature recorded in Mumbai on Tuesday was the highest for the city in the last eight years.

Mumbai Weather: Mumbai is witnessing a heatwave and the maximum temperature recorded on Tuesday was the highest for the city in the last eight years. Mumbai saw a high of 38.7°C on Tuesday, which was 5.9°C above the normal range. The last time the city saw such high temperatures in the month of February was on February 19, 2017, when it was 38.8°C.

But, a senior India Meteorological Department scientist explained that the heatwave in this month is not unprecedented.

This is caused by strong easterly winds, which block the sea breeze. “For any coastal city, the sea breeze regulates the temperature, which currently has a delayed onset and reaches by 10 am to 11 am when the temperature is already hot,” said the scientist, Sushma Nair.

The IMD issued a heatwave alert for Mumbai, Thane and other neighbouring districts in Maharashtra's Konkan region till Wednesday. The city is likely to see a slight drop in temperature on Thursday, however it will not bring much relief.
