Mumbai: A Ganesh idol fell during the arrival ceremony of 'Bhuleshwaracha Raja' in south Mumbai on Saturday night, leaving two persons dead and five others, including two children, injured, civic officials said.

The incident occurred around 10 pm on Balaram Merchant Road near Kabutarkhana at Jay Ambe Chowk in Bhuleshwar, they said.

A civic official said the injured were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals. However, two people succumbed to their injuries.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, traffic police, 108 ambulance service and civic ward staff were mobilised following the incident, he said.

The deceased were identified as Sanket Nevshe (33) and Brijesh Hemant Joshi (30), the official said.

He said that the five injured were identified as Vaibhav Ghenand (38), Pawan Chaurasiya (25), 5-year-old Lavanya Ganer, 7-year-old Divya Ganer and Kunal Kashid (26).

All the injured were in stable condition, the civic officials said.

In Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, the 10-day Ganeshotsav is one of the biggest and most widely celebrated festivals. During the festival, the idols of Lord Ganapati, the elephant-headed Hindu deity, are installed and worshipped in pandals and homes.

For more than a decade, elaborate arrival processions have been organised in Mumbai, with devotees bringing idols to various pandals amid music, celebrations and large gatherings.
