Kolkata Metro Suspends Train Services On This Route, Purple Line Gets Boost
Kolkata Metro has increased the frequency of trains on its Purple Line, currently running between Joka and Majerhat in the southwestern zone of the city.

Kolkata Metro Services: Kolkata Metro Railway temporarily halted train services between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade stations. The suspension was attributed to emergency maintenance on a section of the route that includes a tunnel passing beneath the river Bhagirathi.
"There will be a complete traffic block due to some urgent maintenance work," a Metro Railway spokesperson confirmed. A 'traffic block' refers to a full stoppage of train movement, indicating that no trains will operate along this route until the maintenance is completed.
This decision affects the key East-West corridor, where a significant portion of the line lies submerged under the riverbed, making the technical work particularly sensitive.
Boost for Purple Line: More Frequent Services Begin
While one section of the metro network sees disruption, another is seeing improvements. Kolkata Metro has increased the frequency of trains on its Purple Line, currently running between Joka and Majerhat in the southwestern zone of the city.
As of May 3, commuters on this route benefit from shorter wait times, with intervals reduced from 50 minutes to just 22 minutes. A total of 40 services are now being operated daily on this stretch, a significant jump from the earlier 18 trains.
The Purple Line, although operational only between Joka and Majerhat for now, is set to become more integrated with the rest of the city's network. Construction is underway to connect Majerhat with Esplanade, where it will link up with both the Blue and Green Lines.
In a separate initiative aimed at modernising commuter convenience, the Kolkata Metro has rolled out new features on its 'Metro Ride Kolkata' mobile app. Passengers have been able to purchase up to four single QR-code tickets in one go through the app.
