NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance Of Kolkata Law Student's Gang-Rape, Seeks Report

The NCW also requested medical, psychological, and legal aid for the victim, along with compensation.

The National Commission for Women on Friday took suo motu cognisance of the gang-rape of a student at a law college in Kolkata.

The women's commission wrote to the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata seeking an immediate and time-bound investigation. The commission has also sought a detailed action-taken report within 3 days.

"Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, expressing deep concern and directing immediate, time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of BNS," the NCW said in a statement.

"She has also stressed the need to extend full medical, psychological, and legal assistance to the victim, along with compensation under Section 396 of BNSS.  The Commission has sought a detailed action-taken report within 3 days," it added.

According to the police, the crime took place on June 25 between 7:30 p.m. and 10:50 p.m., when a former student and two staff members of the college allegedly assaulted the young woman on campus.

In a statement, Kolkata Police confirmed that all three accused have been arrested. “A preliminary medical examination of the victim was conducted at CNMC, Kolkata. Witnesses have been examined and their statements recorded. The mobile phones of the accused were seized,” the statement noted.

Kolkata Police chief prosecutor Sourin Ghosal said the accused were produced before the in-charge Chief Judicial Magistrate in Alipore, where investigators cited corroboration between the medical findings and the survivor’s testimony. The court subsequently granted police custody of the three men until 1 July 2025.

BJP leader Amit Malviya said that certain reports claimed the involvement of a TMC member: "The horror of RG Kar hasn't faded, and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal."

"Under Mamata Banerjee's rule, West Bengal has become a nightmare for women. Rape has turned into a routine tragedy. The BJP stands with the victim and her family. We are determined to end this culture of impunity. We will not rest until every culprit is punished," he said.
