Couple Killed In Massive 5-Storey Kanpur Fire, Their 3 Children Feared Dead

A massive fire broke out in a five-storey building in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, killing a couple and their three children.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit or faulty wiring in the shoe factory operating on the first two floors.

A couple including a 45-year-old man and his wife were killed in the massive fire that broke out at a five-storey building in the Chamanganj area of Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, said the police on Monday. 

The entire building was gutted in the fire that broke out in the Prem Nagar area on Sunday. The five-storey structure houses a shoe manufacturing factory on its first two floors, reported PTI. 

According to the police, seeing the intensity of the blaze, the couple's three children -- Sara (15), Simra (12), and Inaya (7) -- are also feared dead. 

The bodies of Mohammad Danish and his wife Nazneen Saba (42) were recovered from the fourth floor of the building, as per the officials.

It took hours for the firefighters to gain access to the fourth floor where the couple's body was found, the officials added. 

The flames and thick smoke emanating from the building was first noticed by the neighbours who then alerted the fire station and police. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Seesmau) Manjay Singh. 

"While the exact reason remains unclear, initial suspicions point towards a possible short circuit or faults in the internal wiring, potentially originating from the floors where the shoe factory was operating," the ACP said.

"The fire led to blasts in a couple of domestic LPG cylinders that worsened the situation," he added.

Firefighting efforts to completely douse the flames are underway, the officials said, adding that people from over half a dozen buildings nearby have been evacuated to insure their safety.
