Jalgaon Train Accident Death Toll Climbs To 13, Eight Bodies Identified

Eight of the 13 victims have been identified, and an investigation is underway by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

The death toll in the Jalgaon train accident rose to 13 after a headless body was found along the railway tracks, said the police on Thursday.

Of the 13, eight bodies have been identified, including two from their Aadhar Cards, said Special Inspector General of Police Dattatraya Karale, reported PTI.

The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday when some passengers aboard Mumbai-bound Pushpak Express got off the train onto adjacent tracks after an alarm chain-pulling incident and were run over by the Karnataka Express heading from Bengaluru to Delhi. 

The Commissioner of Railway Safety, Central Circle, will investigate the circumstances leading to the mowing down of the 13 passengers, according to the PTI report. 

Manoj Arora, CRS, Central Circle, said he will reach the accident site on Thursday between Pardhade and Maheji railway stations near Pachora, over 400 km from Mumbai, on Thursday.

The Railway Ministry has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 1.5 lakh each to the families of the deceased Rs 50,000 to those with serious injuries and Rs 5,000 for people who sustained minor wounds. 

The Maharashtra government has also announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the next of the kin of deceased and free medical treatment for the injured. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolence to the families of the deceased and wished for speedy recovery of the injured. 

"Anguished by the tragic accident on the railway tracks in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of all the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected," said the Prime Minister's Office in a post on X.
