Railways, Maharashtra Govt Announce Ex Gratia Payment For Victims Of Jalgaon Train Accident

The Railways Ministry announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 1.5 lakh each to the families of deceased in the Jalgaon train tragedy.

The Centre has announced ex gratia payments of Rs 1.5 lakh each for the families of the victims who died in the Jalgaon train accident on Wednesday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state government will bear the medical expenses of those injured in the accident. 

At least 12 people were killed while five others were seriously injured as Karnataka Express hit passengers in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district on Wednesday. Four others sustained minor injuries in the accident. 

The Railway Ministry announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 50,000 for those with serious injuries identified as Hasan Ali, Vijay Kumar, Uttam Harjan, Dharma Sawant, and Abu Mohammad. 

Victims with minor injuries were given Rs 5,000 who were identified as Moharam, Hakeem Ansari, Deepak Thapa, and Hujala Sawant.

The injured people were receiving medical treatment at Civil Hospital, Jalgaon, Superintendent of Police, Jalgaon, Maheswar Reddy told ANI. "We will take further action after the Railway will submit its report," he said. 

The tragedy hit when passengers onboard the 12533 Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express, hastily jumped onto the adjacent tracks fearing a blaze and were run over by the oncoming Karnataka Express heading from Bengaluru to Delhi, according to officials. 

Maharashtra government also announced ex gratia money for the victims with Rs 5 lakh to families of those who lost their lives. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish over the loss of lives in the train accident and expressed speedy recovery for the injured. 

"Anguished by the tragic accident on the railway tracks in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of all the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected," said the Prime Minister's Office in a post on X.
