Gujarat AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava Arrested On Murder Charges

AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava arrested in Gujarat for attempted murder after a violent clash at a meeting. FIR includes serious charges; Kejriwal blames BJP for political vendetta.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Chaitar Vasava was arrested by Gujarat Police on Saturday in connection with a high-profile murder case, sparking a political storm and prompting sharp reactions from AAP leaders.

According to a report by news agency PTI, Vasava has been taken into custody on charges related to attempted murder. The arrest stems from an incident in Dediapada, Narmada district, where he allegedly assaulted a local taluka panchayat official.

What Led to the Arrest?

As per the First Information Report (FIR), tensions flared when Vasava objected to his nominee being excluded from the Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko (ATVT) committee — a local-level governance body. The confrontation reportedly escalated when the MLA allegedly directed verbal abuse at the president of Sagbara taluka, a woman, before the situation turned physical.

Authorities booked Vasava under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including:

  • Section 109 (Attempt to Murder)
  • Section 79 (Outraging the Modesty of a Woman)
  • Section 115(2) (Voluntarily Causing Hurt)
  • Section 351(3) (Criminal Intimidation)
  • Section 352 (Intentional Insult)
  • Section 324(3) (Property Damage)
  •

Following the incident, a case was registered at Dediapada police station.

In the wake of Vasava’s arrest, authorities imposed Section 144 in Dediapada — a preventive measure that bans the assembly of more than four people in public spaces to maintain law and order.

The arrest has drawn immediate backlash from AAP, with party leaders labeling it a politically motivated move by the ruling BJP in Gujarat.

Kejriwal, Gopal Rai Slam BJP

Reacting swiftly, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal accused the BJP of using state machinery to target political opponents. “BJP has arrested AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava in Gujarat. After losing the Visavadar by-election to AAP, the BJP is rattled. If they think such arrests will intimidate AAP, they are making a huge mistake,” Kejriwal wrote on X. “The people of Gujarat are fed up with BJP’s misgovernance, goondaism, and dictatorship. Now, the people will give BJP a fitting reply.”

Gopal Rai, senior AAP leader, echoed Kejriwal’s sentiments, calling the arrest “shameful” and a sign of political desperation.

“Rattled by their defeat in Visavadar, the BJP is resorting to such desperate tactics. If they think AAP will be silenced by this, they’re gravely mistaken,” Rai wrote on X. “The people of Gujarat will now respond decisively to this oppression.”
