Delhi Sizzles In Early April. When Will Delhiites Get Respite From Heatwave?

No heatwave was recorded in the month of April in 2023 and 2024, though the maximum temperature touched the 40-degree mark on April 15 in 2023 and on April 26 in 2024, according to the IMD.

Delhi has been witnessing high temperatures since the beginning of April this year, and the mercury has already touched 40 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in the city usually touches 40 degrees Celsius during the second half of April.

Delhi is likely to get some respite as the weather department has predicted a drop in temperature over Northwest India from April 10. The sky will turn cloudy, and the temperature will drop due to a western disturbance over North India, Skymet said.

As per IMD data, these high temperature were recorded in 2022. Back then, the city witnessed its first heatwave on April 8, when the maximum temperature touched 41.6 degrees Celsius.

No heatwave was recorded in the month of April in 2023 and 2024, though the maximum temperature touched the 40-degree mark on April 15 in 2023 and on April 26 in 2024, according to the IMD.

When Is A Heatwave Declared?

The IMD declares a heatwave when the maximum temperature reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains or 30 degrees Celsius in the hilly regions, or when the departure from normal is between 4.5 degrees Celsius and 6.4 degrees Celsius.

India Meteorological Department provides color-coded Heat Wave warning information through its daily bulletins as well as through a GIS-based visualization platform for the next 5 days. 

In India, heat waves occur mainly from March to June and, in some rare cases, even in July. The peak month of the heat wave over India is May.

These States Are More Prone To Heatwave

Heat waves generally occur over plains of northwest India, Central, East and north Peninsular India from March to June. It covers Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Sometimes, it occurs over Tamil Nadu and Kerala also.

The maximum temperature in Delhi on Tuesday is expected to be around 41 degrees Celsius, and the minimum around 22 degrees Celsius.
