Tamil Nadu To Witness Intense Showers
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a period of significant rainfall over multiple regions of Tamil Nadu between June 10 and June 13. According to the latest forecast, several districts may witness heavy downpours, while Chennai is expected to see moderate rain and thunderstorms beginning Sunday, June 9.
The weather department has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in several parts of Tamil Nadu on June 10. Districts likely to be affected include Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupathur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore.
These showers are expected due to ongoing atmospheric disturbances and shifting wind patterns over the region. Residents are advised to stay updated with local weather alerts and take necessary precautions, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
What’s Causing This Weather Pattern?
Tamil Nadu is currently in the pre-monsoon transition phase, a period known for scorching daytime temperatures followed by sudden afternoon showers. This fluctuating weather pattern is being shaped by a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which is steadily moving toward the Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coasts.
Adding to this dynamic system, since June 8, a mix of northwesterly warm, moisture-laden winds and cooler westerly breezes, along with inflowing easterly winds, has triggered localised rainfall across several districts. Areas including Chennai's northern coast, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupathur, and Ranipet have reported intermittent showers, offering temporary relief from the heat.
This convergence of multiple wind patterns, combined with intense ground-level heating, is expected to continue influencing the weather, resulting in sporadic rain and thunderstorms across interior and coastal regions of the state.
