Bengaluru Woman Electrocuted While Fetching Water, Residents Protest Against Poor Infrastructure
Despite being located near the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) headquarters, many residents in Chamarajpet lack direct water connections.

A protest broke out in Chamarajpet after a woman was electrocuted while trying to fetch water from a civic body pump. The deceased, identified as Selvi, suffered a fatal electric shock at around 5:30 AM on Thursday when she attempted to switch on a motor to draw water.
The incident has exposed the severe water crisis and hazardous infrastructure in the area, triggering widespread demonstrations and road blockades.
Despite being located near the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) headquarters, many residents in Chamarajpet lack direct water connections, as per a report on IANS. They rely on pipes linked to the main supply and manually operated motors to access water.
Selvi’s electrocution marks the fifth such incident in the area due to faulty infrastructure. Residents claim that repeated complaints to authorities about the unsafe water supply system have been ignored, leading to preventable tragedies.
Protests In Chamarajpet
Angered by Selvi’s death, thousands of locals took to the streets, blocking Mysuru Road, one of Bengaluru’s busiest arterial routes. The protest caused severe traffic disruptions during peak morning hours.
The situation escalated when protesters demanded immediate intervention from local MLA and Minister for Waqf and Housing, Zameer Ahmad Khan, reported News 18. They refused to end the protest until he provided concrete assurances about resolving the crisis.
The Assistant Police Commissioner attempted to pacify the demonstrators, but they remained firm in their demands. In response, authorities deployed two platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) to maintain order.
BBMP and Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) officials reportedly had no knowledge of the alternative water arrangements that residents have been relying on. The protesters accused them of negligence and demanded accountability for Selvi’s death.
The authorities are yet to issue any statement regarding the issue.
