Bengaluru Stampede: Police Commissioner, Several Senior Officials Suspended, Says CM Siddaramaiah

The Bengaluru police earlier in the day registered an FIR against RCB, the state cricket association, and others in connection with the stampede outside Chinnaswamy stadium that killed 11 people.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said several senior police officers have been suspended with immediate effect in connection with the Bengaluru stampede incident.

The suspended officials include the Inspector of Cubbon Park Police Station, Station House Master, Station House Officer, ACP, DCP (Central Division), the in-charge of the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, the Additional Commissioner of Police, and the Commissioner of Police, Siddaramaiah said.

Siddaramaiah also said that a panel has been appointed under a retired High Court judge to probe the incident. FIRs have been filed against RCB, Karnataka State Cricket Association, and DNA executives, with arrest orders issued.
"Under the chairmanship of Justice Michael D'Cunha, a retired judge of the High Court, we have appointed a one-man commission...On RCB, event manager DNA, KSCA, who represented them, we have taken a decision to arrest them," he said.

Referring to the deep sorrow caused by the incident, the Karnataka CM said, "When I was speaking about the tragedy yesterday, 11 died and 47 were injured -- all were in pain, and we still are. It was important to express our condolences and console the families."

He added that the state cabinet discussed the matter seriously during its scheduled meeting and made firm decisions to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The Bengaluru police earlier in the day registered an FIR against RCB, the state cricket association, and others under various charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, in connection with the stampede outside Chinnaswamy stadium that killed 11 people.

The Karnataka government has also said that the investigation into the stampede has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). A Special Investigation Team (SIT) within the CID will be formed to ensure a thorough and independent probe.
