UP: BJP Leader's Son Involved In Basti Hit-And-Run Case Surrenders To Police

Amanatullah Khan, accused in the Basti hit-and-run case, surrendered and was arrested after fleeing the scene.

The accused in the Basti hit-and-run case Amanatullah Khan surrendered in front of the police and was arrested and taken into custody.

Amanatullah, son of local Bharatiya Janata Party leader Hamidullah on Thursday rammed his speeding BMW into a man who succumbed to his injuries. 

The accused had fled the scene after the incident and was on the run. Initiating action in the case the police detained his parents for questioning. Seeing stern action being taken by police, the accused surrendered and was sent to jail. A case has also been registered against him under Sections 281 and 106(1) of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, said Superintendent of Police Gopal Krishna Chaudhary. 

The car involved in the accident has also been ceased, said the police official. 

The victim, Ram Lal Gupta's family has claimed that the car was intentionally driven into the victim, who worked as a cook. On the day of the incident,  Gupta went out of home in the afternoon for a short walk after returning from work. He was standing on the roadside when the BMW driver drove towards him intentionally and fatally injured him, his wife Gyanti Devi said. 

The victim was rushed to the district hospital where he brought dead on arrival. Following his death, Gupta's family protested on the streets outraged by the police's initial response to the high-profile hit-and-run case. 

Responding to protests by family, police assured that their complaint was registered and appropriate legal steps were being taken. 

A formal case was registered in connection with the matter based on the statement by the family. 

Gyanti, a mother of four young children said her husband was the sole breadwinner for their family.  "Our lives depended on his income," she said. "With him gone, I am uncertain about how to raise our children or secure their future".
