7 Arrested In Assam For ‘Promoting Pakistan’s Cause’ After Pahalgam Attack: CM Himanta Sarma

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said these individuals were arrested for directly or indirectly supporting or defending Pakistan in connection with the Pahalgam terror attack.

The Assam Police have apprehended seven people on Friday for defending Pakistan on social media in connection with the Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 tourists on Tuesday, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The individuals taken into custody were identified as Md. Jabir Hussain from Hailakandi district, Md. A.K. Bahauddin and Md. Javed Mazumder from Silchar district, Md. Mahahar Mia and Md. Mujihirul Islam from Morigaon, Md. Aminul Islam from Nagaon and Md. Sahil Ali from Sivasagar district.

Assam CM stated that these individuals were nabbed for directly or indirectly supporting or defending Pakistan, and further arrests are underway as part of our ongoing crackdown.

Assam University Student Arrested For Inciting Communal Content

Additionally, Silchar police have also arrested an Assam University student based on a complaint alleging the use of inflammatory and communally inciting content on social media regarding the Pahalgam terror attack, a police officer said on Friday.

The officer confirmed that the student was apprehended on Thursday. "He is currently in police custody and will be produced before a court in due course. We are investigating the matter," the officer said, news agency PTI reported.

The development followed after the Assam University unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) filed a complaint.

ABVP sources indicated that a computer science student allegedly posted an inflammatory message on Facebook on Wednesday, using offensive language against several individuals, including ABVP members, for their stance on the Pahalgam terror attack. The original post has since been removed from the platform.

In a subsequent update, the student issued an apology, stating that he had no intention of offending anyone.

Meanwhile, AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam was arrested on sedition charges the same day for allegedly defending Pakistan’s involvement in the Pahalgam attack, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced at a press conference.

Sarma stressed that any form of support for Pakistan, direct or indirect, including through social media, would not be tolerated, and law enforcement has been instructed to act swiftly against such instances.
