Amid Heavy Rain In Maharashtra, PM Modi Cancels Pune Visit To Inaugurate Underground Metro Route

Prime Minister Modi's planned visit to Pune and the inauguration of the underground Metro line have been cancelled due to heavy rainfall in Maharashtra

Pune News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Pune on Thursday (September 26) has been cancelled amid heavy rain in several districts of Maharashtra. PM Modi was set to inaugurate the much-anticipated underground Metro corridor linking Civil Court to Swargate in Pune today. 

Heavy rain has caused havoc in parts of Maharashtra with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert in several districts Thursday. A holiday has been declared in schools and colleges across Mumbai and Thane in consideration of the safety of students while the rain hit local train and flight schedules.

Due to insistent rainfall, water logging and mud slurry were reported SP College campus, where the Prime Minister was to hold a public rally after the metro inauguration. ) In view of a heavy rains alert, the Pune district administration has issued orders to keep schools and colleges in Pune city as well as the Pimpri Chinchwad area closed on Thursday. District collector Suhas Divase issued the directive after the India Meteorological Department issued an alert that there would be rains coupled with lightning and thunderstorms. 

PM Modi's Pune Visit 

Apart from the underground Metro corridor, PM Modi was also scheduled to inaugurate a high-performance computing system at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune to strengthen weather and climate research. Located at two key sites, IITM and the National Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (NCMRWF) in Noida, the new high-power computing systems -- named 'Arka' and 'Arunika' -- are expected to significantly enhance the accuracy and lead time of predictions related to tropical cyclones, heavy precipitation, thunderstorms, hailstorms, heat waves, droughts, and other critical weather phenomena. 

In addition to the infrastructure push, the Prime Minister was also set to lay the foundation stone for the memorial of Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule’s first girl school at Bhidewada in memory of the noted social reformer. Later, he was scheduled at address at a public meeting at SP College campus.
