Will Banks Switch To A 5-Day Workweek From April? Here's What The Govt Said

There have been ongoing discussions between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banking Association (IBA) regarding the possibility of implementing a 5-day workweek for banks

A recent news report has raised speculation that banks across India may adopt a 5-day workweek starting in April 2025, following a new regulation reportedly issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The report has generated significant buzz, with both customers and employees questioning whether banks will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays beginning next month.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has debunked this claim, labeling it as fake news. In a statement from PIB Factcheck, it clarified, “A news report claims that starting from April, banks across the country would operate 5 days a week, following a new regulation issued by RBI. PIBFactCheck: This claim is Fake. For official information related with the Reserve Bank of India, visit: https://rbi.org.in."

What Does Report Claims?

According to the report, a new regulatory decision by the RBI will limit banking operations to just five days a week, meaning that banks will no longer operate on Saturdays. The report suggests that starting in April 2025, banks will follow the same schedule as government offices, with Saturdays and Sundays designated as holidays.

Has The RBI Issued Any Official Notification?

The Reserve Bank of India has not issued any official notification stating that banks will switch to a five-day workweek. Currently, banks continue to operate on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays of the month as part of the existing work schedule.

There have been ongoing discussions between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banking Association (IBA) regarding the possibility of implementing a 5-day workweek for banks. Banking unions have advocated for a shorter workweek, arguing that it would provide a better work-life balance for employees and align with global banking practices.

Current Guidelines For Banks To Remain Open?

In addition to national and regional holidays, bank branches are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. Banks remain open on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays. Sundays are non-working days for all banks.
