Uber, Ola Get Zero In Fairwork India Ratings 2021, Flipkart Tops The List

Fairwork India Ratings 2021 report highlights the working conditions of app-based gig workers

New Dellhi: Uber and Ola, the two ride-hailing companies, bagged zero out of 10 points in Fairwork India’s annual ratings of gig worker platforms in 2021.

Porter, a truck booking start-up that raised Rs 750 crore in Series E funding this year from investors like Tiger Global and Sequoia, also got zero out of 10 points in the evaluation.

Walmart-backed e-commerce major Flipkart has earned the top place among 11 platforms in the ranking this year with a score of seven out of 10.

Fairwork India Ratings 2021 report highlights the working conditions of app-based gig workers.

Flipkart is followed by Urban Company (5), Asia’s largest home services marketplace and Tata-owned online grocer BigBasket (4), and online food delivery platform Swiggy (4).  

This year, no platform scored more than 7 out of the maximum of 10 points, and none scored all basic points across the five principles. Flipkart scored 7, while Urban Company earned 5 points. Food delivery giant Swiggy scored 4 and its rival Zomato got 3 points. E-commerce companies Amazon, Dunzo and Pharmeasy scored 1 point each.

According to the Fairwork India Ratings 2021 report, Ola has more than 300,000 gig workers on its platform, Uber works with over 250,000 gig workers in India and Porter has 150,000.

Combining desk research, worker interviews, and evidence provided by the platforms, the Fairwork India Ratings 2021 scores 11 platforms, including Amazon, BigBasket, Dunzo, Flipkart, Ola, PharmEasy, Porter, Swiggy, Uber, Urban Company, and Zomato.

The Fairwork India Team is spearheaded by the Centre for IT and Public Policy, International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore, in association with Oxford University, presents the Fairwork India Ratings 2021: Labour Standards in the Platform Economy report. The report examines the working conditions of app-based gig workers.

In its third year, the study assesses 11 platforms, from service domains such as domestic and personal care services, logistics, food delivery, e-pharmacy, and transportation.
